Elizabeth Street from Overland Trail to Rocky Road has been reopened after Fort Collins Police arrested a 31-year-old male who had barricaded himself in a home, FCPS Spokeswoman Rita Davis said.
At 12:55 p.m. Fernando Simental, who is wanted on two counts of attempted homicide in Pueblo County, was brought into police custody after more than an hour inside a 2922 W. Elizabeth Street residence.
After being notified by the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Department of the subject’s location earlier Friday morning, Fort Collins police went to the residence, where the man ended up seeing the officers and fleeing back into the home around 11:20 a.m.
SWAT teams arrived on the scene and at 12:30 p.m. FCPS notified all residents within a 1/2-mile radius to stay indoors, Davis said.
Police attempted to phone the home at 12:45 p.m. and after the suspect didn’t answer, gas was sent through the back windows. At 12:52 p.m. Simental emerged from the building with his hands up.
According Davis, there was no one else inside and it is unknown if the man was armed.
At this point, Davis added, it is too early to tell if he was the legal resident of the home.
