US bowing before China

Jan 192011

President Hu Jintao of China was welcomed to the United States Wednesday with a 21-gun salute while 2010 Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo sat in a prison cell for advocating democracy in the communist country.

Hu came to the U.S. on a state visit to discuss relations between the two countries, i.e. the U.S. does not condone Liu being imprisoned because it is a violation of human rights, but Obama refuses to acknowledge that fact because of the current dire economic situation.

Mr. Obama said that he has been “very candid with President Hu,” according to the New York Times, about their difference over the treatment of human beings, but those differences should not interfere with better relations or take away from the issues they can agree on.

In other words, Obama is ignoring values America has stood for since our independence in 1776 in favor of making better trade deals with China. But he doesn’t really have a choice.
The relationship between China and the U.S. has highlighted the atrocious foreign policy America has adopted in the past decades, where instead of standing up for American values, we cow tow to foreign nations for money and trade.

This policy has brought the nation to its current predicament. Holding Liu is immoral and against any basic form of human rights, but can the U.S. afford to make enemies with China when it currently controls the American economy? The answer is no.
