Nestled in a rented garage space sits hundreds of donated books ready to be sent off for free.
These books are going to places where they cannot afford or have ready access to them: state prisons.
Unchained Books is a local group of Fort Collins citizens dedicated to assisting Colorado prisoners with a supply of books ranging from business to romance.
The group began as a letter writing campaign to political active prisoners in 2007 but soon evolved into a partnership with Denver ABC and Matter Bookstore in Fort Collins.
“Sending books and things seems like nothing, but it’s a little something,†said Matt Lawrence, a member of Unchained Books.
The group gets 50 to 60 requests for books per month and sends out bundles every two weeks to nine correctional facilities.
The group takes volunteers and can be reached through its blog, http://unchainedbooks.wordpress.com.
