With a record-breaking $37,000 brought in by this year’s Cans Around the Oval food drive, the Food Bank for Larimer County can buy 148,000 pounds of food.

For each dollar the bank can buy four pounds of food, said Brett Rundle volunteer program coordinator for Student Leadership, Involvement and Engagement in an e-mail to the Collegian.

In addition to the monetary donations, Cans Around the Oval brought in 61,000 pounds of food, 19,000 pounds of which were “highly needed items” like peanut butter, tomato products and canned fruit, Rundle said in the same e-mail.

In 2009, the event saw $27,000 in monetary donations and 90,000 pounds of canned food.

The top contributor for Cans Around the Oval’s 24th year of existence was the College of Business, bringing in more than 15,000 pounds of food and about $17,000.
