Harvey Unga, BYU’s all-time leading rusher, withdrew from the school over the weekend due to a violation of the university’s honor code.
Unga, a 6-foot, 239-pound running back, had 208 carries for 1,087 yards and 11 touchdowns as a junior in 2009, helping the Cougars to an 11-2 record and MAACO Las Vegas Bowl Championship.
While the exact details of Unga’s violation have not been released, rules of the honor code include, but are not limited to, restrictions on drinking alcohol, premarital sex and tobacco use. His girlfriend, Keilani Moeaki, who plays for the BYU women’s basketball team, also voluntarily withdrew from the university.
While it is unlikely Unga will return to the BYU football team, the future is not certain as a university dean will hear the senior-to-be’s case to make a final decision.
