Larimer County Commissioners approved a project to build a power substation just west of Fort Collins to route more power to the Foothills Campus this week, said Brian Chase, the director of Facilities Management.
The substation, which will be built by Xcel Energy and carry a price tag of about $2 million, will increase the power capacity on the campus to address the increasing energy need for the growing facilities there.
CSU will spend about $200,000 of leftover construction money from a number of existing projects, while Xcel and a $1.2 million federal grant will fund the remainder of the project, Chase said in a phone message to the Collegian Wednesday.
Chase said Xcel will begin construction this summer, and university officials expect it to be completed by the end of the year.
