CSU students who want to find volunteer work can now find outlets for their philanthropy with little more than a few keystrokes.
Student Leadership, Involvement and Community Engagement (SLiCE) and The Institute for Learning and Teaching (TILT) have created a Web site that allows students and faculty to access volunteer opportunities on campus and around Fort Collins.
The site, Service@CSU, was created in Nov. of 2009, and officially launched Jan. 21. The site’s intent is to create a “one-stop shop†for anyone looking for service opportunities, Assistant Director of Volunteer Programs for SLiCE Jennifer Johnson said.
Students have typically looked for service opportunities within the SLiCE office, but this site gives them information from other sources.
“There are lots of different ways to serve, but when people think ‘volunteer’ they think SLiCE,†said Director of Service Learning for TILT Clayton Hurd. “But there are dozens of other service opportunities on campus and hundreds around Fort Collins.â€
In addition to links to service activities on and off campus, Service@CSU offers visitors to the site a link to the United Way, which has a searchable database of non-profits in Larimer County.
Service@CSU posts new announcements each week, some of which include internships with different non-profit organizations.
“We wanted to give students a place to get all volunteer opportunities and not just the ones offered by SLiCE,†Hurd said. “We wanted that information to be more accessible than it has been in the past.â€
In the months since its creation, the site hasn’t had much promotion.
“The site is brand new so my guess is that a lot of students don’t know about it yet,†Jennifer Johnson said.
Students have expressed ideas for promotion such as ads in the Collegian and posters inside of Residence Halls.
“I think if the site has good content and there was more advertising to spread the word, students would learn of its benefits,†junior accounting major Ryan Tauer said.
The site can be accessed from the TILT and SLiCE Web sites or at http://service.colostate.edu.
