On Sunday, Feb. 21, senior psychology major Lauren Leary is putting on a benefit show at Avagadro’s Number to benefit Children of the Promise Orphanage (CPO), located in the recently devastated Cap-Hatien, Haiti.
“What has happened in Haiti seems apocalyptic,â€the CPO wrote on its blog after the earthquake. “It seems with desperation setting in and level of uncertainty rising, that the earthquake may have been the easier part to survive. Reports came to us that diesel could rise to $60/gallon. Price of food seems to be blood, and relief is in slow motion.â€
The orphanage has more than 24 children trying to get to the United States to reach their adoptive families or to get medical attention. As of Tuesday, COP’s blog reported 10 children landing safely in Miami, but flight clearance and hospital care is still urgent for many.
The event will run from 1 p.m. to midnight, featuring live music, silent auctions and an appearance by a local boy who was adopted from the orphanage and still has family in Haiti.
Admission is $10, $5 for students and free for children under 12.
