Renowned architect and author Sarah Susanka would argue that there is a connection between a room and a person’s mind.

And she will support this argument on campus tonight in her speech, “Architecture of the Soul,” that will examine the question of how a person’s surroundings affect the way they live their life and how that person can change their surroundings to reflect who they really are.

“She took this premise of architecture and remodeling and applied it to how we make room for what really matters in our lives,” said Pam McCracken, communications director for the CSU Health Network.

Susanka was invited to CSU as the keynote speaker for the university’s “Connect Mind, Body, Spirit” fair that takes place today from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Lory Student Center.

She is the author of eight books including “The Not So Big House,” “Home By Design,” “The Not So Big Life: Making Room for What Really Matters” and last year, she published “Not So Big Remodeling.”

The acclaimed thinker is responsible for the “not-so-big” and “build-better-not-bigger” philosophy of today’s residential architecture.

She has been recognized across the country by numerous organizations including Newsweek, which selected her as a “top newsmaker” in 2000. She has even appeared on the “Oprah Winfrey Show.”

The fair, in its sixth year at CSU, consists of 15 “Mind, Body, Spirit” workshops from 2 to 6 p.m. in the LSC and a vendor fair in the main ballroom from 1 to 6:45 p.m.

CSU Health Network and Campus Recreation hosts the fair in order to enable better living for everyone, event coordinators said.

“Both the Rec. Center and CSU Health Network know there’s a strong connection between body and mind, as well as spirit,” McCracken said. “And because both of us are here to serve students, part of what we want to do is give some information and education back to the students.”
