College football fans never miss an opportunity to cheer on their teams, and today CSU Rams fans will get that chance.
Today is National Signing Day.
Always the first Wednesday in February, National Signing Day is the first day a high school senior graduating in the spring can sign a binding National Letter of Intent to play college football.
CSU fans should have reason for optimism, as this year’s class is expected to be one of the strongest in recent years.
Coming off a disappointing 3-9 season, CSU head coach Steve Fairchild and his assistant coaches hit the recruiting trail hard, landing commitments from recruiting hotbeds Florida, Texas and California.
One of those commitments, four-star quarterback Pete Thomas, is already enrolled at CSU for the spring semester. Thomas is the first four-star recruit CSU has landed out of high school since fullback Tristan Walker in 2002 –– evidence of the impact Fairchild has had at CSU.
Expected to join Thomas in the 2010 class is Dallas, Texas native Tony Drake at running back, offensive lineman Mason Hathaway from Southlake, Texas and linebackers Charles Favors and Marquis Hood from Orlando, Fla. All are three-star prospects.
For these high school seniors, it is their chance at their own 15 minutes of fame as the Ram faithful will pay close attention to their decisions today.
For the coaches, they are hoping months of traveling and making phone calls and perfecting their pitch for CSU football pays off in signing the best available players to build the future of CSU football.
Fairchild and his staff will discuss the 2010 recruiting class and the upcoming season at two 2010 Ram Roundup recruiting receptions as well as at a press conference today at 1 p.m.
The first reception is today from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Hilton in Fort Collins. Fairchild will break down film of each incoming recruit and will talk about each athlete in depth.
Fairchild will also introduce his new recruiting class at the fourth annual Ram Roundup at the Cherry Hill Country Club in Denver Feb. 9, 6 to 8 p.m.
