Bands from across Colorado battle it out in Scene’s 17th annual Battle of the Bands Sunday.

All nine bands this year are from the Fort Collins and Greeley areas, but anyone in the state is allowed to apply.

Owner of Scene magazine Michael Mockler started the battle because “my job is related to my life, it’s everything I love to do combined.”

It is free for bands to apply but they must submit a tape or recording of themselves and some background information.

“It’s a great way for us to support the music scene,” Mockler said. “Most of the judges are talent finders, so the bands get a lot of great opportunities.”

The winner of the battle will receive 10 hours of recording time with the local studio Pig Pen, a spot on the cover of the December issue of Scene and will be able to book a few local gigs.

“Each band gets 15 minutes to set up and 30 minutes to perform. We provide the mics and amps, so it’s literally a plug and play,” Mockler said.

The bands will perform Sunday at The Cork in Fort Collins, and it is free to the public.
