In head coach Steve Fairchild’s weekly press conference Monday, he announced that senior place kicker and punter Jason Smith broke his upper right arm during Saturday’s mock game and will be out for an undetermined amount of time. The scrimmage was closed to media and the public.
“Our non-contact has a little contact and he thudded a little too hard,” Fairchild said. “When it happened, I was standing right there . I just thought he bruised his arm, he walked off and I didn’t think it was anything serious at the time, but unfortunately for him, and us, it is.”
Fairchild said he hopes Smith will be back in time for the conference opener against UNLV on Oct. 4, but until then, freshman Ben DeLine will be both the place kicker and the kickoff starter.
Junior college transfer Anthony Hartz has been named punter.
