Just two days after the CSU softball team swept the Hotel Encanto de Las Cruces Classic in New Mexico, senior third baseman Lauren Cusick was named the Mountain West Conference Softball Player of the Week.
The announcement came Tuesday, following the Rams 5-0 weekend, during which Cusick was named MVP of the New Mexico tournament. Her 12-for-21 weekend included three doubles, a triple and four home runs.
Cusick also drove in seven runs, while scoring 12. Against Texas Arlington in the weekend opener, Cusick was a single shy of hitting for the cycle. In that game, she doubled, tripled and homered in consecutive at bats.
Defensively, Cusick had a perfect fielding percentage. She also is the middle of an eight-game hitting streak, helping the Rams to their best start in 20 years at 9-1.
“Lauren’s an outstanding player– both offensively and defensively,” CSU coach Mary Yori said. “She has a good eye at the plate, she can draw walks and has a pretty swing.”
Cusick and the Rams return to action Friday at the University of San Diego Tournament in San Diego, Calif.
