The CSU men’s and women’s cross country teams will be racing at home this weekend at the Colorado State Classic, held on the property surrounding Hughes Stadium.

The teams will compete against teams from University of Northern Colorado, Metro State, Black Hills State, Colorado College and Adams State.

Adams State’s women’s and men’s team are currently ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the NCAA Division II polls.

CSU’s women’s team is ranked 18th in the latest Division I poll.

“They are going to give us some competition,” coach Bryan Berryhill said.

For junior Kirsten Anthony, Adams State provides the biggest competition at the meet.

“We will want to beat them,” she said.

Berryhill said the teams have been progressing nicely in practices during the last two weeks.

“The workouts are getting faster from week to week,” he said.

The women continue to have a strong team, while the men’s team has been a little inconsistent, Berryhill said.

“We are just working on being competitive,” he said, as this is only the second meet of the season.

Sophomore Jeremy Freed echoed Berryhill’s sentiment.

“It’s going to be a good tune-up for later races,” said Freed, a junior business marketing and finance major.

Freed is also looking forward to facing Adams State.

“Hopefully I’ll get some competition up at the front,” Freed said.

The Rams opened their season at the Wyoming Invitational, where the women’s team placed first and the men’s took second-place.

Anthony is eager about the race because those who can’t go to the away meets will be able to watch the team run.

“It’s good because we can have family and friends watch,” she said. “Having people cheer for us is what we are excited about.”

The meet will start out with an open race for community members at 8:30 a.m., followed by the collegiate women’s 5K race at 9:45 a.m. and the collegiate men’s 4-mile race at 10:30 a.m.

All of the proceeds from the open race registration go to the CSU cross country teams. For more information on registering for the open race, please contact Runner’s Roost.
