I would like to write a letter in response to Marissa Hutton-Gavel’s article, “You know its V-Day when…” For those who don’t know, the “Hallmark” Holiday stems from Saint Valentine who lived in the 300s A.D. He married people in secret who were not allowed to be married.
As a result he was martyred for his belief that love has no boundaries. There is more to the vague story and there is record of three St. Valentines all martyred for their faith. It was also believed in the Middle Ages that the birds began to mate in the middle of February and an ancient pagan ritual is on Feb. 15 when young men would pick a “name out of the hat” and then they would be lovers for the rest of the year.
