Following a rough month, CSU women’s basketball looked to pick up back-to-back home wins to begin what it hoped was a new start to the season.

Unfortunately for the Rams, Adrianne Ross and TCU were not interested in the feel-good story as the Lady Frogs picked up an 85-67 win Wednesday night in Moby Arena.

CSU (7-15, 2-8) could not overcome the hot shooting of the junior guard as well as senior guard Ashley Davis. Ross scored 23 points on 11-of-14 shooting while Davis posted 20 points and never missed a shot for TCU (17-7, 7-3).

Junior guard Sara Hunter led the Rams with a career-high 28 points while senior center Marilyn Moulton added 13.

The Rams had a chance to get their first consecutive victories since December, the month before suspensions and defections took the season downhill.

But TCU simply shot too well. The Lady Frogs finished the night shooting 58 percent from the field and 75 percent from three.

“They’re obviously a talented team,” Hunter said. “They make a lot of plays, but we’ve got to get in their faces on some of those shots and make stops when we need them.”

No stops could be had, especially in transition, as TCU capitalized on 27 CSU turnovers, its second most this season, a statistic head coach Jen Warden credited partially to the Lady Frogs’ athleticism.

“I don’t think we were in a hurry,” she said. “I’d say four or five of those turnovers were just athletic plays. Obviously we struggled with the double-team down low on Moulton.”

Moulton finished with nine turnovers, the most of any Ram.

The Lady Frogs were hot from the beginning, shooting 63 percent from the field including 86 percent from the 3-point arc in the opening half.

Ross shot 6-for-7 for 13 points and Davis made all four of her shots, scoring 11 first-half points as TCU took a 43-30 lead at halftime.

TCU opened the second half with a 12-5 run again keyed by the shooting of Ross and Davis.

The two guards continued to hit nearly every outside attempt and, with seven minutes to play, had built an 80-46 lead, TCU’s biggest of the game.

CSU mounted a late 14-0 run but it was too little, too late as the squad picked up its eighth loss in its last nine games.

Rams head coach Jen Warden was complimentary of the Lady Frogs’ shooting but disappointed with her team’s transition defense.

“That was impressive,” she said. “I thought our half-court pressure was great. They just kept leaking out transition threes. That’s uncharacteristic of our team to give them those looks.”

The CSU women will try to rebound Saturday on the road against the Mountain West Conference’s second-place Utah Utes at 3 p.m.
