A shred of yellow police tape rested along the side of a church south of campus Sunday night, hours after children discovered part of a woman’s frozen body sticking out of the snow.

Police don’t suspect the middle-aged woman died a violent death – there were “no obvious signs of foul play,” according to a statement released by the Fort Collins Police Services.

At about 11 a.m., a member of the Foothills Unity Church – 1815 Yorktown Avenue – called police, saying that some children had found a dead body. The four kids, between 6 and 10 years old, had been playing on the lawn outside the church when they found the body.

The cause of death had not been determined, and the woman’s name was not released.

On Sunday night, a trail of footprints marred the inches-deep snow on the west lawn of the church. They led toward a stand of evergreen trees, ending at a spot where the snow had been dug away in the rough size and shape of a person.
