CSU men's golf finished fifth at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate tournament at the Leilehua Golf Course in Honolulu over the weekend weekend. Southern Methodist University took the team title.
The Rams had a 3-round score of 277-277-278, for a total of 32-under par. Junior Derrick Whiting finished tied for third at 13-under. Freshman Zen Brown finished in a tie for 17th while senior Nate Pettitt finished 6-under and tied for 25th.
Kevin McAlpine and Aaron Weston finished in ties for 41st and 96th, respectively.
The Mountain West Conference showed its power at the tournament with BYU taking second place, New Mexico taking third and San Diego State finishing fourth. CSU placed above conference foes UNLV and Utah. The Running Rebels took 11th place and the Utah Utes finished last, in 19th place.
Coach Jamie Bermel was happy with the team score.
"We beat some good teams this week," Bermel said. "There were a lot of good teams (there), and a lot of Mountain West teams too."
Bermel was happy with the team's finish but expects the Rams to improve on their strong start.
"We played good this week," he said "We needed a few more birdies today. We just ran out of holes."
