For the second year in a row the CSU Rams lost in the last seconds in Boulder. Once again the Rams lost by three, and once again the deciding factor was the CU place kicker.

Junior kicker Mason Crosby booted a 48-yard field goal leaving the Rams just four seconds left in the game, handing the Rams their third consecutive Rocky Mountain Showdown loss.

“That’s why Mason Crosby is an all-American,” said CU head coach Gary Barnett.

A hail-marry attempt fell into the hands of CU and Buff fans poured onto the field in celebration.

“Did they win the Super Bowl out there?” said CSU head coach Sonny Lubick of the CU fan reaction following the win. “That’s Colorado State out there that came and gave them everything they can handle, we’re going to be a damn good football team and we proved it out there.

A 9-yard pass from CSU senior quarterback Justin Holland to sophomore tight end Kory Sperry tied the game at 28 with 36 seconds remaining in the game. CSU chose to squib the kickoff, even though senior kicker Kevin Mark had forced the Buffs to kneel on the ball for touchbacks throughout most of the game.

After initially bobbling the ball sophomore kick return man Stephone Robinson returned the kick to the forty. CU then managed to get the ball to the CSU 38 with nine seconds left on two passes by senior quarterback Joel Klatt.

CSU went into the forth quarter with an eleven point lead, but Holland threw three interceptions, one on the hail-mary, which led to two of Colorado’s three touchdowns in the final quarter.

The loss was just the fifth time the Rams lost a game they led going into the forth quarter under Lubick.

The question of whether this game is a rivalry may have been answered by the record Folsom Field attendance of 54,972.
