Finally, no parents.

It’s a great feeling being away from your parents after 18-plus years at home. Now, you can decide what to eat for yourself, decide what time you want to be home by, and just generally decide where you want to be and when you want to be there.

That includes this weekend.

For many this will be their first weekend away from home. There is certainly a temptation that comes with this newfound freedom. There are plenty of parties to attend and people to meet, but it’s important to remember that this is only the first of many weekends away from home.

If you choose to drink this weekend, just don’t overdo it. The detoxification center in Greeley or the back of an ambulance might not be the best place to start out your college career.

CSU does offer some opportunities to meet other students and have a good time this weekend. There’s a Ram Carnival tonight with booths and rides, and plenty of activities within individual residence halls.

While these activities may not sound as fun as a night on the town, they do offer a safe alternative to a night of heavy drinking.

Remember you have many nights ahead, you’ll have ample opportunity to forget.
