While conference play is still in its early stages, the action

is quickly heating up. San Diego State sits atop the Mountain West

standings in hopes of repeating last year’s first place finish.

With a four-game win streak, the Aztecs hold a two-game lead over

second place UNLV. With the best overall record in the conference,

Colorado State hosts a strong BYU team this week. Here’s a look at

what has happened so far and what’s to come:

No. 1 San Diego State (27-18, 6-2)

The Aztecs host UNLV on Saturday. The game displays the

conferences top two records. Last weekend the Aztecs extended their

home conference win streak to 13 games.

No. 2 Nevada-Las Vegas (21-25, 4-4)

The Rebels have a new coach in Lonni Alameda and look to improve

on last year’s 4-14 conference record. Senior Bridget Byrne leads

the team in batting average (.432), hits (64) and slugging

percentage (.493). Before going to San Diego, the Rebels head to

the University of Cal-Riverside for a non-conference game.

No. 3 BYU (21-12, 3-3)

After hosting a doubleheader against Utah State on Tuesday, the

Cougars (21-12, 3-3) head to Fort Collins for a pair of games on

Thursday (1 p.m. and 3 p.m. starts). Last week the Cougars split a

two-game series with in-state rival Utah. Sophomore Laneta Le’I

leads BYU with a .354 average.

No. 4 Utah (13-22, 3-3)

Utes head coach Mona Stevens, in her eighth season, reached 250

victories for her career with a win against BYU last Saturday. The

team now looks to more conference action versus last place New

Mexico. Senior Glennis Donnelly ranks first for Utah in nearly

every offensive category, including: batting (.439), runs (30),

hits (50), home runs (12) and RBIs (34).

No. 5 Colorado State (26-11, 2-2)

CSU went 2-2 last weekend in conference play with two wins

against UNLV and two losses to SDSU. Leading CSU are seniors Ricki

Walker and pitcher Megan Masser. Walker has a .402 average while

Masser is 5-3 with a 1.92 ERA.

No. 6 New Mexico (26-22, 0-4)

Without a conference victory this season, the Lobos are seeking

their first while hosting Utah this weekend. At home, New Mexico is

6-1, compared to its 7-12 road record. Pitcher Ashley Perkins is

having a strong season with a 12-5 record and 1.92 ERA.
