The CSU men’s basketball team signed the Colorado Class 3A
Player of the Year and two Texas guards to letters of intent
Wednesday, according to an athletic department release.
Jason Smith, a 7-foot forward from Kersey, averaged 20 points,
10 rebounds and five blocked shots for Platte Valley High School as
a junior last year.
TheInsidersHoops.com, a recruiting Web site, rated Smith the
sixth best big man in the West. Oregon, Gonzaga, Wyoming and Utah
also recruited Smith.
“He will enable us to play two or possibly even three big guys
at the same time,” coach Dale Layer said in the release.
The Rams also signed shooting guard Sean Morris, brother of CSU
sophomore guard Michael Morris. Sean Morris, a 5-10 guard, averaged
17 points, four rebounds and three assists for Cinco Ranch High
School in Katy, Texas, last season.
CSU also signed Morris’ teammate, point guard Charlie Jones.
Jones and Morris led Cinco Ranch to back-to-back district titles
and a 30-6 record. Jones averaged eight points, two steals and four
rebounds last season and has a 3.7 grade point average at Cinco
Ranch.
