With their backs against the wall, the Rams pulled out an
impressive finish in their final tournament of the fall season at
the Nelson in Palo Alto, Calif. The Rams shot a tournament-low 277
to go from seventh place overall to finish fourth. That
fourth-place finish marked the fifth consecutive tournament in
which the Rams finished in the top five. Top honors went to Duke
University for the second year in a row. The Blue Devils finished
with an 18-under-par 834.
Senior Nolan Martin paced the Rams to their blazing finish,
shooting a 7-under 65 to finish third on the leader board with a
three-round score of 203 (10-under). Martin’s round of 65 made him
the second person in CSU history to fire a single round score of 65
– teammate Martin Laird is the other.
For his part Laird finished the tournament tied for 15th at
3-under with a total of 210. John Hayes continued to play well for
the Rams and tied for 31st. finishing the tournament at 1-over,
214. Kevin McAlpine and James Kurtenbach, rounded out the team’s
five-man field. The duo tied for 60th with three-round totals of
221.
Individual honors went to Ryan Blaum of Duke and Brad Heaven of
Toledo. The two tied for first place with a total score of 201,
12-under-par.
The Rams now take a break from competition to prepare for the
spring season. Their first tournament is the John Burns
Intercollegiate on Feb. 18.
