Paul Allen Bates, a retired professor emeritus of English at
CSU, died Aug. 28 at the age of 83 in Fort Collins.
Bates was born in Sioux City, Iowa, and served in the Army Air
Corps during World War II.
He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Iowa
and earned a master’s and doctorate from the University of
In 1955 Bates moved to Fort Collins and served as a professor of
English for CSU for four decades. Bates enjoyed spending
sabbaticals in England and at the Folger Shakespeare Library in
According to his family, Bates enjoyed travel, Shakespeare,
playing bridge and spending time with family and friends.
Bates was a well-recognized local activist for peace and also a
member of Veteran’s for Peace, Women’s International League for
Peace and Freedom, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars organizations,
among many others.
A son, Paul Patrick Bates, preceded Bates in death. Bates is
survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Fagan Bates of Fort Collins;
a son, Daniel Bates of Brea, Calif.; and two daughters, Joy Speitz
of Lewellen, Neb. and Sarah Bates of Venice, Calif.
A celebration of Bates’ life will be held this Saturday at
Foothills Unitarian Church in Fort Collins at 10 a.m.
