CSU freshman golfer Lynette Duran won individual medallist honors as she took first place in this week’s Mountain West Conference Women’s Golf Championship in Sun River, Ore. She finished shooting three-over par, two shots ahead of her competition.
Collectively, the Rams took third place behind three-time reigning champion University of New Mexico. San Diego State finished second, 11 shots behind New Mexico and five ahead of CSU.
After the first round CSU was eight shots behind New Mexico, but an impressive second round put them into second place, only three shots behind the then-leader, San Diego State. New Mexico proved to be too much in the third round though, as the Lobos pulled out of reach from the five other teams.
The MWC announced the all-conference team that included two CSU golfers at the conclusion of play Wednesday. Duran and junior Mayumi Motoyama were among the seven golfers, four from UNM, to receive this honor.
The Rams finished the tournament with four players in the top 18. Besides Duran taking first, Motoyama placed ninth, while senior Bridget Johnson and sophomore Stephanie Linnell tied for 18th. n
