CSU’s Kiah Hicks was named Mountain West Athlete of the Week for the second time this season on Tuesday. Hicks performed well at the CU Invitational last weekend in prelude to the honor.

The Colorado Springs, Colo. native took first place in the shot put with a throw of 49′ feet, 7 inches, which was third-best in the Mountain West this season, and she also took first in the discus with a throw of 178-5.5′, which is a personal record and places her ninth nationally.

This was the third Mountain West Athlete of the Week award given to CSU this season, as Trevor Brown also received the award earlier this year.

The Colorado State Rams will next participate at the Mt. Sac Relays beginning Thursday in Walnut, Calif.

Colorado State Juniors Trevor Brown and Ashlie Ortega both earned Mountain West Athlete of the Week awards for their respective sports on Tuesday.

Brown, a Colorado Springs, Colo. native took second place in the 60-meter hurdles at the Joe Davies Open in Golden, Colo. with a time of 7.86 seconds, which was just behind his conference record mark of 7.84 which he recorded on Feb. 9 at the Air Force Team Challenge.

His time of 7.86 seconds is the 28th best time posted this year nationally, and with his last finish Brown has now placed either first or second in all five of his races this season. This was the second time in Brown’s career that he received this award.

The CSU Track & Field team will travel next to Boise, Idaho for the Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Championships beginning on Feb. 21.

Ortega, CSU’s star shortstop from Brighton, Colo., earned her first career Mountain West Player of the Week award after leading the Rams to the championship game of the Troy Cox Classic in Las Cruces, N.M.

Batting from the leadoff spot, Ortega hit .444 from the plate going 8-18 with two home runs, one triple, and two doubles while walking four times and driving in 13 runs and scoring six more.

The team concluded the tournament with a 4-1 record and will hit the road yet again for a five game tournament next weekend at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Calif.
