The Mountain West Conference athletic directors decided the conference will be seeing a shift in format this year. Football will be divided into two divisions of six teams, with a championship game at the end of the season. All the other sports will remain the same as an 11-team league. The split will be geographical, maintaining traditional rivalries, with a West Division and a Mountain Division. CSU will be in the Mountain division with Wyoming, Air Force, Utah State, Boise State, and New Mexico. The West Division will be made up of Hawaii, San Diego State, UNLV, San Jose State, Fresno State and Nevada.

Each team will play the other five schools in their division, along with three games against teams in the other division. The winners of each division will then play in a championship game on December 7, 2013 at the home stadium of the team with the highest BCS ranking.

Basketball teams will continue to play 18 regular-season conference games. Jack Graham, Athletic Director of CSU said this format will be maintained so the teams will get the opportunity to schedule non-conference games. This will boost the RPI of the schools within the Mountain West. For more of Graham’s reactions to this new format, you can visit the Coloradoan.
