Two weeks after the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI the College of Cardinals has chosen a new Holy Father.  They elected Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio as Pope Francis on Wednesday. Hailing from Buenos Aires, Argentina, Bergoglio is the first Pope from the Americas or the “new world.” He is also the first Pope to choose the name Francis and the first Jesuit Pope. The Jesuits are an order of priests founded by Saint Ignatius who focus heavily on education.

There is an estimated 1.2 billion Catholics in the world today. Blessed John the 23th is the local University Parish here in Fort Collins where students gathered to await and then celebrate the announcement of the new Pope. Local Catholics are excited about Pope Francis and are waiting to see how he will perform in office.
