University of Colorado Chancellor Phil Distefano signed a no-smoking policy for the Boulder campus on February 6, 2013. The policy will go into effect on August 19th. The student government at Colorado State University in Fort Collins has been considering similar bans for its campus. The policy is aimed at cleaning up the air quality and preventing the waste caused by cigarette butts. There will be no fines or charges for students or faculty who are caught smoking on the Boulder campus, but they may be referred.
