The air in the Lory Student Center Theater at 7 p.m. on tonight will be filled with smooth Latin tunes, as events for National Hispanic Heritage Month continue with the 10th Annual Evening of Music and Dance.

Richard Salas, associate director of El Centro and Greek Life, said since the celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month began 10 years ago, the Evening of Music and Dance has become a highlight program.

“The 10th Annual Evening of Music and Dance is a great way for students and others to learn about different Latin music genre as well as enjoy a nice evening of entertainment,” Salas said.

The event, which will feature a performance by the Manuel Molina band and Salsa performances by CSU’s Gliceria Rodriguez and Ruben Escobar, will showcase the diverse aspects of Hispanic culture through music and dance.

“The dance serves as the oasis in the National Hispanic Heritage Month celebration. It is an event that allows us to enjoy the different communities in the Hispanic cultures and is a reflection of our lives through the arts,” said Amanda Montoya, president for the Multicultural Greek Council. “It is a celebration you would be sad to miss.”

For the last 10 years, Salas said El Centro has collaborated with the Association for Student Activities and Program Concerts, ASAP, and Fort Fun to host a wide variety of Latin bands and different Latin dancers to educate, entertain and provide a way for everyone to come together enjoy themselves.

“We have had music and dances from Panama, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Mexico, Columbia and Peru, to mention just a few,” Salas said.

For this year’s event, ASAP, Gaining Understanding through Involvement, Diversity and Education, GUIDE and Fort Fun will provide support.

“Although the LSC Theater is limited to dancing space, those interested in dancing to the music of Manuel Molina will have the opportunity to go up on stage and show their dancing talents,” Salas said.

The event is free and open to the public and doors open at 6:30 p.m.
