Fire fighters responded to a hay bale fire currently spreading off of Doubletree Drive and North Overland Trail in northwest Fort Collins this morning. The fire began at 2 a.m. and has sent smoke as far south as Loveland.

Complaints of a strong odor have been reported and can be attributed to more than 6,000 hay bales currently burning.

Poudre Fire Authority dispatch predicts that it will take several more hours to put out the fire. The hay bales will continue to smolder even if the fire is contained, and water will cause flare-ups.

Citizens should not call 911 about the fire unless it is related to a separate incident.

Poudre Fire Authority also urged people to close doors, windows, and ventilation systems to prevent smoke inhalation.
