Author and National Public Radio’s News Hour correspondent Ray Suarez will be giving a keynote address at CSU’s 10th annual Diversity Conference.
The event will begin on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Main Ballroom on the top floor of the Lory Student Center.
Suarez, who has done NPR’s News Hour since 1999, will be talking about how biases may inhibit progress toward shared goals and how to develop ways to reduce the impacts of bias.
“He brings a unique national perspective and an in-depth understanding of the challenges we face as a society in managing and strengthening the substance of diversity in America,†said Stephen Mumme, a CSU political science professor and panelist on the Arizona SB 1070 Panel – a part of the diversity conference.
“We are fortunate to have him on campus this semester as a Monfort scholar and doubly fortunate to have him inaugurate our Diversity Conference with a special lecture,†Mumme said.
This year’s theme: Diversity in the 21st Century –– What the Recession Revealed.
Kira Maixner, coordinator for the conference, said it will focus on how the recession has affected people of all demographic background as well as a range of other topics. The events run today through Thursday.
“(The conference) will introduce people to many more topics of diversity. There are sessions that address diversity locally, nationally and internationally,†Maixner said.
CSU hosted its first conference of this kind in 2001 and focused on the diversity and retention of undergraduate students. Its audience was a select group of deans and department heads and spanned only a day.
The next year, the university opened the event to the campus and Fort Collins Community.
Maixner said the conference provides an environment for people to talk and learn about the impact of the recession on people of color, people from different socieo-economic backgrounds, people of different religions, genders and sexual orientations.
The conference is free and open to the public.
