For one night, the University Center for the Arts will be home to the Broadway hit “Bye Bye Birdie,” a musical narrative of Elvis Presley’s induction into the Army.

CSU’s Music Department, in collaboration with Opera Fort Collins, will present a concert version of the musical on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the Griffin Concert Hall. Tickets are $5.

In 1958, when Presley was put on service, the Army received fan mail asking for his life to be spared, and when this was denied his agent kept his music on-air to satisfy Elvis’s audience.

The play, however, does not feature the King of rock ‘n’ roll. “Bye Bye Birdie” tells Elvis’s story through a young rock star who, after receiving notice of draft, pulls a publicity stunt at his farewell concert.

The play is based off a book, deemed “a satire on American society in 1958,” according to a press release.
