“We blazed our trail across the frozen Tundra of America’s Bread Basket in Search of adventure, super villains and poetry.” –– The Dynamic Duo.

The Dynamic Duo, a Denver-based slam poetry group, will perform in the Lory Student Center Theater at 8 p.m. tonight.

Ken Arkind and Panama Soweto are National Poetry Slam Champions who have traveled the country for the past five years, performing at more than 200 universities and other numerous venues.

Known as poetry’s favorite crime fighting pair, the Dynamic Duo, covers social issues with humor while exploring a wide variety of topics from racism to video games.

Emily Burnett, a senior natural sciences major and member of ASAP, hopes that students gain an appreciation of slam poetry through this event.

“Sometimes students outside of the (English Department) don’t get these kinds of experiences. (The Dynamic Duo) does slam poetry about comic books and video games, but they have different meanings hidden underneath it. It’s really cool how they work both of those things in,” Burnett said.

Arkind and Soweto use their energetic and engaging poetry to help initiate social change in their community by involving themselves in poetry workshops with the Denver youth in juvenile detention centers as well as in high schools.

Burnett hopes this event will bring in a broader range of students.

“This is slam poetry like I haven’t seen it before. I think students should attend this event because it’s kind of outside of their norm,” Burnett said. “I don’t hear of very many slam poets that come in and I think it’s something cool that people should experience.”
