I would like to express my thanks to the graduate students in the Department of Anthropology, the staff of the Rocky Mountain Sustainable Living Organization and the owner of Avogadro’s Number for an incredibly successful fundraising effort on behalf of Jason Bush.
He is a student in our department who was diagnosed with testicular cancer four days before his student health coverage began. But the fact that Jason’s friends and supporters had to go to such lengths in order to raise money to pay some of his medical bills or even that Jason has to rely on the Colorado Indigent Care Program to cover other costs is shameful.
We live in one of the richest countries in the world, and one of our top priorities should be the health of our residents. We all have a right to health care, just as we have a right to a public education and freedom of speech.
The only way that this right will be realized is through meaningful health care reform preferably the institution of a single payer system, and at the very least a strong public option.
