For the fourth time this season, Mekana Barnes was named Mountain West Volleyball Player of the Week on Monday. The junior middle blocker shared the honor with University of Nevada-Las Vegas senior Lauren Miramontes.
Barnes combined for 24 kills, 11 blocks while averaging a .434 attack percentage in wins over conference rival Wyoming and Arizona last week.
Barnes was surprised to receive the honor for an unprecedented fourth time this season.
“I am just trying to be consistent,” the Thunder Ridge graduate said. “I am trying to a threat that helps the whole team.”
The season Barnes has put together has put her right in the center of the race to become the MWC player of the year. Miramontes is the 6-footer’s closest competition.
The Rebels middle blocker has been named conference player of the week three times this season.
Barnes tries not to think about the possibility of becoming the season MVP.
“I need to stay humble,” she said. “There are good players all around the conference. All you can do is stay on your own game.”
