When CU-Boulder kicker Kevin Eberhart hit a 22-yard field goal with 13 seconds left on the clock to tie the score at 28, he sent the game into the CSU history books.
The overtime that resulted from the kick was just the second time in CSU history that the team played beyond regulation and the first time against the Buffaloes.
Head Coach Sonny Lubick said that the Showdown being close is nothing new to the Rams, and that an overtime game will just help to cement the rivalry.
“I think that the rivalry has a lot to do with it. They’ve all been fairly close,” Lubick said. “We as a staff and a team knew it was going to take everything against a school with tremendous tradition and a good coaching staff. They have good athletes. I think in college football you cannot blink or you will get beat.”
The loss drops coach Lubick’s record in the Showdown to 4-8 all time, 4-4 when the game is played in Denver.
The Rams now are 0-2 in overtime, including a 25-22 loss against Fresno State, October, 13, 2001.
