With all the odds against them the Rams went into Moby Arena Wednesday night still looking to put up a fight against one of the best teams in the Mountain West Conference. The Utah Utes had other plans.

With two starters missing from the starting line-up, CSU let the Utes take a quick 8-2 lead and never caught back up. By the time the final buzzer had sounded the Utes were on the better end of a lopsided 80-56 score and had improved their record to 18-5, 93 MWC, keeping them at second place in conference. The Rams remained second-to-last.

CSU gave up 21 points off of turnovers and let the Utes get easy baskets off fast breaks. The Rams were sent to the free-throw line only seven times and shot 42.9 percent as a team from the foul line, compared to the 89.5 percent free-throw performance from Utah.

Utah All-Star Kim Smith scored a game-high 18 points and pulled down eight rebounds throughout the game. Smith was named this week's Mountain West Conference women's basketball player of the week for the second week in a row. Starting guards Shona Thorburn and Julie Larsen added 17 points each to the final score. Larsen went 5-7 from behind the 3-point line.

"Smith is a Kodak, All-American candidate. More than scoring, she makes the people around her look better. She has earned her mark in history," head coach Jen Warden said.

Senior forward Melissa Dennett did not start for the first time all season. She ended the game with a team-high 11 points, tied with senior guard Vanessa Espinoza who also contributed 11. Junior guard Molly Nohr ended the game close behind the seniors with 10 points and seven rebounds.

"Utah came out and played hard early. We couldn't play defense for the first 15 minutes of the game. I think we did a good job fighting back. We didn't give up," Nohr said.

Senior forward Lindsay Thomas and guards Sara Hunter and Liz Kramer all added eight points each.

The Rams will go on the road again this weekend to Las Vegas, Nevada where they will take on UNLV at 8 p.m.
