Despite junior Derrick Whiting winning the individual title, the CSU men's golf team finished second place Tuesday at the Rice Intercollegiate Tournament in Houston. Santa Clara University won the tournament by five strokes.
Whiting won the prize by defeating Brian Grossman of Stephen F. Austin, Michael Nicoletti of Santa Clara and Trey McNeil of Louisiana Tech in a four-way playoff.
"We were one stroke out in the final round," said head coach Jamie Bermel. "I'm happy for Derrick, but we just didn't get it done."
Conditions at Willowisp Country Club put up quite a fight along with the competition during the tournament.
Bermel said the winds were gusting hard Monday and slowly died down as the day went on. The course faired better Tuesday, Bermel said, but the lack of wind still didn't help their short game.
"We didn't play well around the greens," he said. "We just could have done better."
Despite his frustration with the end result, Bermel is still confident in his team.
"Santa Clara is ranked higher than us," he said. "But we still could have beaten them."
