Las Vegas, Nev. – Riding a six-game win streak coming into the Mountain West Conference Tournament, the Rams showed no signs of slowing down.
Armed with a No. 2 seed, the Rams faced off against the No. 8 seeded New Mexico Lobos in the first round.
The regular season matches between these two teams were split, indicating the quarterfinal could go in either team's favor. But the Rams jumped out to a quick start and took the match in three games by scores of 30-18, 31-29, 30-13. This was the third straight year the Rams have knocked the Lobos out of the conference tournament.
The Rams came out with lots of firepower, slamming the ball from all angles of the net. The Rams tallied 46 kills on the night.
"We have to create our own environment," said head coach Tom Hilbert. "Today we were tough."
Senior Dre Downs paved the way for the Ram victory as she recorded nine kills and hit a match-best .615.
"It's really easy to set (Dre), and it gives me a lot of confidence," said freshman setter Ashley Fornstrom. "She can hit over anyone in our league.
Fornstrom had an impressive game as well, which included a career-high five service aces.
With the three-game victory, the Rams would head into a semifinal match versus Utah.
