Dear Mountain West Conference Media,
Thank you for ranking the CSU Rams No. 8 in the preseason MWC rankings, proving once again that you should get paid to cover the games, not predict the season. If I recall correctly, you ranked TCU No. 6 in the conference for football – we all know how that worked out. Two thumbs up!
You are obviously blinded by the "fact" that a young team lost their supposed star player in the departed Matt Nelson. I think you are mistaken. Don't get me wrong, Matt Nelson was a solid post player for the Rams, but held the team down from showing off their unparalleled athleticism on the fast break. One name, remember it: Freddy Robinson. He's back after a yearlong absence due to injury. He is arguably the most athletic forward in the conference. If he just put on 20 more pounds he would have the perfect NBA body.
I saw that the Andrew Bogut-less Utah Utes are ranked No. 2. Are you serious? The only real player they have is Bryant Markson, who averaged 10 points last year. And news flash to Utah coach Ray Giacoletti, Misha Radojevic is not going to be the next Bogut. This 24-year-old junior transfer from Serbia is going to be a bust against some real competition in the form of Jason Smith and Michael Harrison.
The worst part about the rankings is that the Air Force Falcons are four spots above CSU. You can't be serious about that, can you? Jeff Bzdelik is their coach. He is the Jeff McGinnis of coaching – awful. He is going to ruin a program that has strived to succeed on a structured offense. In no way will Bzdelik be able to run the fabled "Princeton offense." Yes, he may have been coaching while Carmelo Anthony took the 2003-04 Denver Nuggets to the playoffs, but anyone could have done that considering the talent on that team. Look what happened to him last year when the Nuggets started just 13-15. He got canned like the fake fruit my roommate buys at King Soopers.
Just by watching two Ram preseason games, they have already shown glimpses of that Nuggs team that led the NBA in fast-break points just two years ago. After last year's disappointing season, head coach Dale Layer promised a new run-n-gun offense that was based on a strong-armed full court trap. That is exactly what the Rams have done.
I cannot stress enough the athleticism on this squad. You have guys like Mike Morris, who is a human highlight reel. SportsCenter Top 10 anyone? Not to mention his little brother Sean, who can put up 30 on any given night. Junior transfer Corey Lewis is a very vocal floor general who hits shots when he needs to. He moves in along with fellow transfer junior Michael Harrison, a JUCO All-American. And there is no doubt that with his pure talent, freshman forward C.J. Clark will contend for MWC Freshman of the Year. Andrew Patterson and Ryan Brown are going to be lighting it up from beyond the arch.
The bottom line is that the Rams are the most athletic team in the conference, and they're going to be jumping out of the gym. They are going to finish in the top four in the MWC. With a new coaching strategy, they are going to be L-E-G-I-T. They might as well come out to MC Hammer's first album, because they are not quitting anytime soon.
