The triple jump, also known as the hop, step and jump, is a track and field event that consists of three different stages in one move.
The event is a horizontal jump for distance requiring speed, coordination and strength.
The jumper runs down a runway lane until he or she reaches the mark. Then the sequence of three phases for the jump begins.
The first of three distinct movements is the hop, where the jumper takes off and lands on the same foot. Then, the athlete jumps and usually lands on both feet and then skips and immediately jumps as far as possible landing into the sandbox, also used for the long jump.
If the jumper lands or touches the ground with the wrong leg, the jump is not allowed.
