Seventeen-year-old Karen Buckley of Cheyenne, Wyo. was charged

Tuesday with leaving the scene of an accident involving death.

Buckley is accused of leaving Shailynne Manning behind after

Manning was ejected off a moving vehicle.

Buckley was driving Manning in early September around Fort

Collins. They took the car from Buckley’s parents without them

knowing.

According to Fort Collins Police Services, Manning was atop the

moving vehicle “car-surfing” when she fell off.

Manning was unidentified in the hospital until family from

Wyoming concluded its search for the 15-year-old days later. On

Oct. 6, Manning died of complications resulting from the

accident.

Police said Buckley told bystanders to call 911 and left the

scene while Manning lay on the pavement.

Buckley faces up to eight years in jail or up to 16 years if

aggravating circumstances are found. She is currently serving one

year in a Wyoming youth detention center after pleading guilty to a

misdemeanor for joy riding in her parent’s car.

Manning’s father, Don Manning, believes his daughter was not car

surfing that day, but instead was sitting on top of the car when

Buckley drove off too quickly.
