Club Roundup
Club sports are back in full swing, after taking a winter break
with the rest of the students at CSU and this could be one of the
best spring seasons for CSU club sports.
The 2003 national champion lacrosse team will take to the field
this week to open the spring season. CSU will kick things off
ranked No. 1 in the USL-MDIA poll. The Rams will head Friday to
Tempe, Ariz., for two games, one with No. 14 Arizona and one on
Saturday against Arizona State. This could be one of the hardest
seasons in CSU club lacrosse history, as CSU will take on seven of
the top 10 teams in the rankings, including the University of
Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich.
The CSU baseball team will head to La Junta to open its spring
season against the Otero Junior College Rattlers this weekend. The
two-game series opens on Saturday and concludes on Sunday. The Rams
will look to keep the same consistency that they have had for the
last few seasons in making a run to the World Series. CSU’s talent
is also constantly getting better as proven in last season’s
drafting of pitcher Nate Nowicki by the Florida Marlins in the 19th
round of the 2003 Major League Baseball Draft. That is a rare feat
on a club team. The last player to get drafted into MLB from CSU
was current club coach Frank Gonzales by the Detroit Tigers in
1989.
The CSU hockey team took to the ice Friday at EPIC ice rink and
took care of business against the No. 2 CU Buffaloes with a 6-2
victory. Freshman CSU fan Mat Stone said of the Rams after the
game: “They are a much better team than CU.”
Both teams then traveled to Boulder to play Game 2 of the
two-game series where CSU met a tough CU defense and lost a
heartbreaker 2-3. CSU retains its No. 1 ranking but is now
splitting first-place points with CU 6-3 in the Western
Division.
The Rams cannot afford to dwell on the loss because they need to
turn their attention to the No. 10 Washington Huskies. The Huskies
(15-9), fighting for the last spot in the playoffs, will come to
EPIC for two games on Friday and Saturday. Both games will be at
7:30 pm.
